Happy Halloween!

After carving this sad sack, we took Isabella to the Alerus to the Halloween show. It wasn't too bad, and she got lots of candy (most of which she can't eat and so was divided up between me & Karissa). I dressed as a philosophical zombie. They look like you and me, except they are completely lacking in all personal conscious experience, and so cannot even refer to themselves in the first person.
On the downside, some little bastard stole my jolly roger flag hanging outside our front door. Not JUST the flag, mind you, but the flag and the pole it hung from. As much as I love this holiday, it's sometimes a reminder of the shitty neighborhood I live in.

I Would Like My Head Returned to Me, Please!

Here is my line drawing for Perspective. Next Assignment will be to find the best way to shade it and make a fully shaded in piece. This was done from a photo of the old Grand Forks Herald Printing building, a night or two after it caught fire during the '97 flood.

I was very disappointed to look out my back window saturday to see the head from my witch missing. Some little bastard stole it while I was at work. Nothing else, just the decayed witch head, the one thing I worked on with enthusiasm and was very proud of.

I thought I was getting over my cold, but Sunday night, it elevated again, and I think I got another little fever. I felt better after some Dayquil and a night's worth of orange juice at work. I'm feeling better all around today, but I still have a cough, and I'm worried I'll lose my voice. It's not really bad since I work nights, but I do still have interaction with people & answer phones in the mornings, so we'll see how I do.

Who's a Sicko?

This guy!
But I'm getting over it. Some Alka Seltzer Cold Plus, some chicken soup, and a little Golden Brown makes it all better.

By the way, it's currently playing in New York and has already attained a cult following.

Finished Homework

It got done a little late, but I'm glad I at least finished it, I got a wicked head cold and it's not fun to have to try and concentrate on one thing when your head is all floaty.

Thumbnail Revision

I had to go back and redo my thumbnails, because they were only supposed to be line drawings, plus I forgot that 1pt perspective should be emphasized. These are only about 3x4 in. Posted by Picasa
You've seen this scene already, I just had to experiment with the lightsource for part of the assignment. Posted by Picasa

Dead Art, Russian Art, Roadside Motels, and Old Things: Our Roadtrip

Thursday:
We dropped Isabella off at Karissa's mom's house around 4-4:30. It seems like a late time to go out of town, but we only had to make it to Alexandria. We got to Alexandria in good time, and checked into the L-Motel. I got a room here on purpose, because it's been a long time since I've stayed in basic, raodside motel, and I've always kind of liked them. The lady who checked me in did so as she bottle-fed her infant, all the while her son was trying to get her attention and throwing his little cushy ball around the office. Beyond them I could tell was their living room, which just made the stay better since I realized this was one of those places like the Devils Lake Topper, where an apartment is attached to the motel and the management is live-in. But fear not, it had a network connection for my laptop.
Later that night, we drove around a little bit. We accidentally didn't drive far enough to hit downtown, but then we drove to the other end and accidentally drove onto the interstate heading towards Osaki.

Friday:
In the morning we got up and hit downtown. One of the things we found out about Alexandria is that they are king of the small-town antique business, and that every SINGLE store contains a basement which is also used to for selling their stuff. Yes, you can call me gay if you want, but I love antiques. I'm not one of those people that actually knows anything about them or goes to auctions, I just like old musty stuff worn/used by people who are more than likely long dead. Incidentally, I found an old Russian officer's hat (which I did not buy but should have). It was cool. I did buy an old movie camera that actually had unused film in it, and had the address of its previous owner (a military man) written on the back. Karissa also persuaded me to buy an old hat that was well-preserved (from the '60's).
We also found a hole-in-the-ground comics shop and a thrift store that outclassed any I've seen thus far in appearance, where Karissa bought an old suitcase.
Afterward, we got back onto the interstate (same one we accidentally drove onto, this time on purpose as it was actually the route leading to Minneapolis). We had a good trip, listened to some Rob Zombie along the way, as well as Karissa's goddamned Big & Rich. It took us a couple tries to find the Travelodge in Bloomington--it was cleverly hidden further than the exit Google gave us. I was overall disappointed with the room. One bed cost over $90 a night! Our motel charges just a little over half that for two beds. Luckily I got the employee discount, which brought it from ridiculous down to a little absurd.
We got settled in quickly, then planned our route into St. Paul. We got to the Science Museum early, so we had to check out some of the exhibits before doing the Bodyworlds thing. Parking was interesting, because we couldn't go in the normal way, and we had no idea where to get to spot the signs were telling us to go to. So we parked in the Target Event Center parking and pretended we were going to whatever event was going on there.
I think I should probably warn people that I've talked about this so much, that I think I may have built it up for people. April was a little disappointed when they went, and Karissa also thought it was supposed to be a little better than it turned out. I thought it was great. I got exactly what I expected (except there were no religious extremists protesting or criticizing it, I thought that would have been interesting to see). I even got the book. The rest of the museum was unfortunately not as great. I personally wanted to see more exhibits on early cultures and evolution, and most of what I saw was paleontology, meteorology, and some exhibits that were more for kids.
After the museum, I thought I'd drive around downtown St. Paul a little, see what it was like. It was fun, but then we got back on the road to take us into Minneapolis, and got ourselves severely lost. We tried to get our bearings, but it got so confusing that we finally had to stop at a gas station and buy a Minneapolis area map from an extremely rude bitch who obviously wanted us gone. A few more confusing turns and we found ourselves driving by SexWorld. I thought about stopping, but thought there might be a cover charge and didn't want to pay it. Turns out, I read later it's just a gigantic porn store, we probably could have gotten in free as a couple, but oh well.
We did get back that night. It took us an hour and a half, but we did it. After all that, Karissa still had to drag me to Wal Mart because she got bored.

Saturday:
I regained my courage from the previous night. Saturday morning was more of us getting lost, then finding St. Mary's Basilica and getting to see it about an hour before mass. We also thought a wedding was going to take place, judging by some of the dressed up people we saw. Back in our illegally parked car, we found the Nicollet Mall, which is apparently a fancier mall than I've seen. It was three or four floors, contained stores like Sack's 5th Avenue, some other high brow stores, and a nice little food court. We walked around downtown a little, found the metrodome, then headed back to the motel.
A little later, we went to the Russian Museum of Art, which was awesome, and we found out we apparently like Socialist Realism because we liked a lot of the paintings we saw. There was an overpriced gift shop where we picked up a couple matrioshkas. After that, we hit Toys R' Us, Babies R' Us and Borders, where I went a little overboard and bought, among other things, a book on Zombie philosophy and the physics of superheroes. Afterward, we drove around some more, and got lost in the Latino part of town. We parked across the street from a bazaar, and as I was putting quarters into the meter, this guy wanders up and mutters something I could barely understand, and it took him a couple more times for me to get "you don't have to put money in on Saturdays".
We wandered around the bazaar a little, but everyone was speaking spanish and some eastern language, and everything was ridiculously overpriced, though we wouldn't have known at first, since nothing had price tags. Karissa teased me about being the only white guy we saw in that part of town (she's white, but she passes for mexican and apparently native american as well). We got out okay, and found a Don Pablo's (they owned Paulo's when it was in East Grand Forks) which had extremely efficient service for a packed place.

Sunday:
Packed our bags, got the hell out of the motel and hit the mall of america. It was fun, as usual, except that I couldn't find the donut stand. We did find a little Halloween cafe, I bought a short sword half price and a Batman figure for my collection, and by the time we got back to the first floor, Karissa was too tired for the Aquatic thing, and we kind of just wanted to go home.
The ride was not all that bad, actually. A four hour ride is always a little grueling, but I stayed awake the whole time, and we got to Mayville by about 8:30ish. We stayed that night in Mayville with a sick Isabella (head cold), then took off for home this morning. I slept like shit the whole weekend, including Mayville. Usually motel beds and me get along perfect, but this weekend was slightly different.
But here we are, 3 1/2 days and about 600 miles later, Karissa's in bed, and I'm just about to grab a quick shower before work. The whole trip, we only took about 3-4 picture of the motel inAlexandria, because it was cheaply teddy-bear themed. So that's that. Karissa can let me know if I left anything out.

Ben Franklin Wasn't So Smart

http://webexhibits.org/daylightsaving
I STILL don't get the reasoning behind Daylight Savings! Apparently there's even proof that electricity usage in the summer is barely less than any other part of the year. Are people just stupid? Logically you will use the same amount of appliances! Set the clocks an hour ahead, and you'll stay up an hour later using energy! I don't get it!

My Friday (ch ch ch ch ha ha ha ha)

I guess I had to celebrate in some way having a friday the 13th in October. You can see the pictures below to see what I've been up to. The night before, I made our candy box. Yesterday, I embarked on a "super spectacular special secret" halloween project I wouldn't tell Karissa about. This is different from the "other" secret project I plan on doing. I finished it all by sundown, and what you see below is what Karissa encountered on her way home from work last night. I was greatly satisfied when she said she didn't like it (she wasn't exactly expecting to see a barely visible dead thing waiting in the dark for her). I did some other stuff, too, but I didn't get pictures. Then, when I was all done with it, I settled in to watch Friday 13th, parts 1 and 8 on Bravo before going to bed. Today, when my cartoons are done, I'm gonna watch Rob Zombie hosting TCM Underground which I had to record last night. By the way, anyone who's interested, he's hosting the show at 1am every friday.
We didn't have a good halloween candy bowl, so I made one. Unfortunately, we waited a day after filling it with peanut butter m&m's to take the picture. Posted by Picasa
This is actually pretty accurate. Our facial muscles are in reality newspaper shreddings. Posted by Picasa
I'm sorry, but broken playground rules have to be punished. Posted by Picasa

I know, it's weird that her head looks charred, yet the fire hasn't even been lit. Just think of it as an extremely looooong wait of execution. Posted by Picasa

Pretty Thumbnails, A Golden Brown Page, Hurry-Clouds

Here are more thumbnails I had to do for Perspective. I really like the bottom left one.

For those of you still bearing with me, I've posted a new page of Golden Brown. You can see I've been experimenting with gray markers in it.

I did a walk around the outside of the motel last night (I thought I heard banging noises & went to see if the wind had knocked anything loose), and I stopped at the dark part to observe the sky--the clouds were just racing south, and it was really weird to look at. I actually didn't mind the intense wind so much, either, since it didn't have snow in it.

Playin' My Instrument Again, Another Vikings Win, Halloween 'Spirit' Begins

I suppose I should talk about my weekend. Okay then. Kevin & I played bachelors since the girls both had to work this past weekend. We loaded the car with musical equipment and a baby and headed down to DL. Friday night, we tracked down Butto (we actually had to do a little tracking, go figure), and ended up waiting for him at his freakishly messy apartment. Yeah, I was a little scared something was living under all of it.
Anyway, we three went to Champions, me with the intention of nursing one beer for the night and be the responsible driver. While I was nursing, the bartender came up and asked if I was 'Doug'. I was honest with her, and found out she was my brother's friend who I drew the skull tattoo for last summer. She showed me her appreciation that night by giving me a free shot of Jack. I gotta do more tattoos for bartenders.
We weren't there for long before my brother, who had been in GF the whole day and went to a hockey game, showed up. So, we hung out with him the rest of the time and argued about music--mostly Metallica, because Kevin and Butto were successfully trying to be douchebags and tell me St. Anger sucked to get a rise out of me (to which I replied "ACDC sucks, too!").
That night I dreamt we had forgotten Isabella in a restaurant, and by the time we went back for her, another family had claimed her. That was NOT a good dream at all.
Saturday night, Kevin and I went over to Derek & Tabs to play. We didn't sound very good at all, but we did actually make a little progress in reteaching Derek to play some Misfits stuff, and even got to try out "Lie Detector" by Reverend Horton Heat. I'd still like to work with Ben, too and see what we can do with a cello--also, if you're interested, Ben, I have a crappy bass I can teach you to play. Just a thought.
Sunday we watched the Vikings win against a shitty team. Oh well, a win's a win. I was very happy, and Detroit is now 0-5 (they suck worse than Packers!!).
I have officially begun putting up Halloween stuff. I have some big ideas for things, though I think w've pretty much bought all the decorations we needed. Also, I have a very super-special, absolutely spectacular secret project I want to get done as soon as I can before Halloween. It's not a comic, nor is it an assignment for school. That's ALL I'M GONNA SAY.

Relationships

This assignment was about showing relationships of parts of the body to others...I don't really feel like getting into the explanation behind it, so you're left to wonder why my brother is riddled with red and blue lines.

Finished Piece #2

I thought the previous one could have been done better, so I (gasp!) went ahead and did an extra one. Yeah, that's right. I was done with my homework, then did and extra picture to push my learning. Don't expect it a lot, just give me my pat on the back and say, "good effort, you little mamser."

Finished Piece #1

This is a finished version done from one of my thumbnails. The perspective looks a little screwy, because the scenery isn't angled exactly to fit with eachother.

Thumbnail Sketches

These are for my Perspective class. Thumbnails are quick and dirty sketches to give you an idea of how to approach a more detailed piece.

Yaaw Yaaw, Yaw Yaw Yaw Yaw Yaaaw, Yaaaw!

I think I no longer have any use for the Superbowl commercials. They try way too hard these days, especially the fucking beer commercials. GoDaddy is still pretty cool, because they continually fight with censors by putting that chick with her snapping spaghetti straps in. And maybe some insurance commercials can stay in my favor. But the beer commercials are getting pretty old. Remember every Janet Jackson video after, say, 2001? It seems like she really started trying to get attention in her videos, and now she somehow looks like a cross between Michael and Latoya. Creepy.
Anyway, the reason I went down that tangent is because I have a new favorite commercial. I still laugh at the cellphone-throwing guy, and I know I've already dubbed that Bazooka Joe commercial with the baseball players the funniest commercial, but it's been officially replaced by a Skittles commercial that's been airing recently. Some of you may have seen it, it involves a guy trading his skittles for a rabbit. I'm not going to tell you what the rabbit is doing, you'll just have to se the commercial. It's quite possible the stupidest commercial I've ever seen, and it even has a creepy element to it, but that adds to how cool it is.
I just wanted to say that.
